Why should I consider a security waist pack?

Good question.  Consider this, while out during the day enjoying the sights, using public transportation, shopping or dining, where do you carry your digital camera, camcorder, money, credit cards, passport, and other valuables?  If you use a regular waist pack or purse, they can easily give you a false sense of security, no matter how close to your body you carry them.

Ask any US Consulate what is the number one security issue travelers face and the answer will be the same, no matter if you are in Berlin, Germany or Timbuktu, Mali, theft!  Not robbery, not burglary, but the age old crime of theft.  After speaking with Resident Security Officers (RSO's) from embassies around the globe, they all recommend being especially careful of pickpockets and sneak thieves. The majority of US travelers who are victims of crime are targets of pickpockets and sneak thieves.

Both men and women are equally at risk.  Many of these thefts involve some sort of distraction some of which are outlined at the end of this page.

What is the solution?

In the situations above, you would still have your property if  your valuables were in a security waist pack.  This could also save you the frustration and countless hours in making police reports, notifying credit card companies, and waiting in line at the local embassy in an attempt to obtain another passport.

What's so special about these security waist packs?

Each security waist pack provides your property four levels of protection:

F
irst, the main security feature of the security waist pack is the rear strap. It is uniquely sewn with the "HipSafe" strap.   Invisibly sewn inside the entire length of each rear strap are two, slice resistant ,flexible, stainless steel braided cables.  Each cable is 1/16 in diameter and made up of seven individual stainless steel strands, which are woven into a hex pattern to increase the cable's strength, which looks like this:. This special feature, the only one of it's kind, keeps the strap from being sliced by a razor blade or knife from behind you on a busy and crowded train platform or street.  The security waist pack rear strap is adjustable from 29 inches to 44 inches.  Extensions, expand the length of the strap an additional 20 inches, and are available as an accessory. clear_security_fanny_pack_cables_in_strap.jpg (94350 bytes)

This is a photograph of a "HipSafe™" strap in clear plastic(for presentation purposes only).  You can see how each flexible stainless steel cable is sewn into each side of the strap with double stitching.

Second, the slice resistant, braided stainless-steel cable strap is one piece sewn completely through the pack, so it will not tear out. Thereby making the security waist pack even more secure from someone attempting to rip the pack off from the rear by force.

Third, each security waist pack has a unique "zipper security catch. Unique in its design, it locks the zipper pull in place so it can't slide open. The "zipper security catch" secures the top zippered compartment, along with the front zippered compartment if desired, thereby keeping you valuable belongings safe.  Fann Pack 005.jpg (106770 bytes) When used, this feature requires two hands to open the pack.  Easy for the wearer to do, but extremely difficult, if not impossible, for even the most experienced pickpocket to open without getting caught.

The pack has a total of three zipper compartments.  The main zipper compartment  contains a concealed zipper pocket inside and another zipper pocket is located on the outside front of the pack for often needed items.

Fourth, the pack incorporates a special Velcro
® wrapper that covers the strap buckle.  This provides additional security by covering the buckle so no one can squeeze and release it.  The two adjacent photographs depict the cover.  The first photo shows the buckle, unwrapped, and the second shows it wrapped. Image005.jpg (501760 bytes)

The security waist pack which contain the organizer, has all of the same features as the regular packs.  However, the outer pocket is designed like a wallet with slots and compartments for credit cards, money and change, eliminating the need to carry a wallet.  The organizer also has a built in strap to secure your keys from getting lost.

Security Waist Pack Extension Straps
(add up to 20 inches in length to your pack straps!)

What's so special about these security fanny pack extension straps?

Strap extensions are available for all of the Security Fanny Packs so they may be worn by anyone, regardless of waist size.  This product also enables the Security Fanny Packs to be worn on the shoulder and even across the body.  They are manufactured to the same specifications as the straps attached to the fanny packs.  Our security fanny pack straps may look  like your average fanny pack, but it’s what’s inside that counts.  Each security fanny pack provides your property with two levels of protection:

First, the main security feature is what's inside the security fanny pack strap extension.  It was originally designed with safety and security in mind.  Each strap has invisibly sewn  inside the entire length of each rear strap two, slice resistant,  flexible, stainless steel clear_security_fanny_pack_cables_in_strap.jpg (94350 bytes) braided cables.  Each cable is 1/16 in diameter and made up of seven individual stainless steel strands.  Each strand is then woven into a hex pattern which further increases the cables strength.  The final result of this woven product looks like this:.  Here is a photograph of a purse strap made of clear plastic for presentation purposes only.  You can see how each flexible stainless steel cable is woven into each side of the strap with double stitching.

This special feature, the only one of it's kind, keeps the pack from falling into the hands of a nimble handed 17-year old track star.  Especially as he or she attempts to cut the rear strap with a razor blade or knife from behind as you are standing on a train platform or crowded street.

Second, the security waist pack extension straps incorporates a special Velcro® wrapper Velcro-wrap-for-security-fa.gif (276862 bytes) that covers the strap buckle.  This provides additional security by covering the buckle so no one can release it from behind you.   The two adjacent photographs depict the cover.  The first photo shows the buckle, unwrapped, and the second shows it wrapped utilizing the Velcro® cover. The wrapper around the buckle not only secures the pack from being unbuckled from behind, but it finishes and cleans up the look of the pack.

What is the length of the Security Waist Pack Extension Straps?
First you need to know the expansion of the original straps which are incorporated into each security waist pack.  The length is different for the two sizes available.

The Medium Fanny Pack Strap is adjustable to 44 inches. The Large Fanny Pack Strap is adjustable to 46 inches.

The extension straps expand the above sizes an additional 20 inches:

The Medium Fanny Pack now becomes adjustable to 64 inches.

The Large Fanny Pack now becomes adjustable to 66 inches.

Here are a few theft modus operandi.  You may even know someone who has  fallen victim to one of them.

Cardboard Children Scam
First off, a disclaimer.  The term gypsy used is specifically made in reference to a specific segment of the Roma population who support themselves through various organized criminal activities, and who call themselves Gypsies.  Many peopel are aware that the majority of Romany people are not criminals.

While not restricted to Europe, the "cardboard children" can be seen unabashedly choosing their victims, confronting them and making off with their valuables--right outside of well know tourist attractions such as the Coliseum. This is how they operate. Roving  bands of usually 6 to 10 children of various ages, confront a tourist while holding a piece of cardboard. Usually the cardboard has something written on it like "Food Please" or some other sympathetic plea. The tourist is momentarily confused by the cardboard being shoved up against them. The purpose of the cardboard is to distract. While the gypsy children swarm the tourist and press the cardboard against the person's body, they also create a scene by shouting and begging for money or candy. The distraction de-sensitizes the tourist's body to the feel of little hands entering their pockets, wallets, purses, or unsecured waist packs. These thieves have even been know to cut the rear strap of a waist pack or strap of a purse.  The raucous event can takes less than 30 seconds to perpetrate.

As the pack of children dissipates, you regain your composure until you realize your valuable property is missing.  Seeking out the culprit is useless as all the children have quickly fled in different directions. You are left, desperately searching your pockets for the lost valuables, totally helpless. It took place so quickly.

Train Platform Scam
This scam is frequently reported to take place on train / subway platforms, as well as on trains, subways, and buses themselves. The crime almost always occurs when a crowd is present, allowing the thief to get very close behind the unsuspecting traveler.  Due to the many people, it does not raise suspicion to be standing so close.  When the train pulls up to the platform, everyone begins to "pulse" towards the opening door.  When this occurs, the thief naturally presses up against your back side, unbuckles your unsecured waist pack, or more brazenly cuts the rear strap with scissors or razor blade allowing the bag to drop or slide off.  This is all quickly accomplished and goes unnoticed by you and fellow passengers caught in the chaos of boarding.  A few moments later you go to place your hand on your pack, discovering its disappearance.  In reality, it fell into the hands of the "sight of hand" expert who removed it and most likely placed it in a shopping bag to conceal it. Often the thief does not stay on the train.  Many times he simply turns around and exits the train, leaving you  to go on to the next station.
