SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Security Straps

SPT Lockable Tie Downs - A unique tie down strap security system that combines dual strands of cut-resistant and extremely tough stainless steel cables which are embedded into reinforced webbing.

These security straps are then integrated with a keyed locking system to protect your valuable gear from theft. These two security features are tough enough to deter all but the most determined thief. The SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps are the simplest and easiest method of securing your valuables to your vehicle, such as surfboards, work ladders, ski’s, portable generators, snowboards, work tools, kayaks, canoes or pretty much anything you want to put on the roof, left in the bed of ar pickup truck, or tied down to a trailer.

Sold in pairs, SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps are used in exactly the same way as conventional tie down straps, and have been specifically designed for use on any secured roof rack system.

What makes these locking tie down straps different from other locking straps on the market is what’s inside the straps.

Incorporated inside each strap are two hardened stainless steel cables which are encased with finely stitched 33mm webbing.

The steel cables being encased inside webbing makes them virtually impossible to cut. Once these lockable tie down straps are fastened to the roof or bed of a vehicle or trailer, each strap is secured through an extremely strong die cast buckle.

Security Tie Down Straps Feature Three Security Components

SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps feature three security components - the lock, the buckle, and the strap.

SPT KanuLock Security Strap Lock

Each SPT KanuLock Security Strap includes a rugged die-cast weather proof lock which is water and weather resistant.

The lock includes 2 double-bitted keys which has teeth on both sides, allowing it to be inserted in either direction.

The SPT KanuLock security straps utilize a keyed lock in an effort to make it faster and easier to use, especially during conditions when the lock is out of sight, such as the evening hours, or when the buckle is completely out of site. The lock is capable of being opened as long as you can reach it with your finger tips.

The SPT KanuLock security straps specifically use a keyed lock instead of a combination type.  Keyed locks are proven to hold up significantly better over time, especially in outdoor environments.

SPT KanuLock Buckle

The tamperproof keyed buckle is made from hardened diecast zinc and is made to be weather resistant. For additional protection from the elements, it is covered by a rubber boot which also helps protect your vehicle and gear from scratches when used.

Security Strap

Each SPT KanuLock Security Strap is sold in either an 8 or 13 foot length.  The outer webbing is made from of thick cut/tear resistant polypropylene webbing that is 1/8” inch thick by 1 1/4 inches wide.  However it is what’s inside the webbing that really makes the SPT Straps stand out from the rest.

Sewn into the entire length of both sides of the SPT webbing straps are two cut resistant stainless steel aircraft cables.

Can SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps Be Cut?

With regular tie down straps, anyone can walk up a vehicle and remove a surfboard, kayak, or work ladder without attracting any attention. If the valuables on or in the bed of your truck were secured by regular tie downs, a thief could simply unbuckled or cut the non-security web strap with a blade or knife with little to no effort.

SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps are made to prevent this type of theft due to each strap being embedded and reinforced with two, 2.5MM braided stainless steel cables.

One would think that it would be easy to cut a strap which contained two steel cables, however due to SPT Strap's patented construction; the strap is very difficult to cut.

This is due to the fact that the two steel cables are each mounted in thick  polypropylene webbing which completely surround the steel cables. This feature makes it difficult for the metal cutters to get to it cable.  Because the majority wire cutters are solely designed to cut metal and are not designed to cut the  polypropylene webbing, once the blades of wire cutters and bolt cutters come in contact with the outer webbing material, the blades become mashed together in the cutters jaws, thus preventing the cutting of the webbing material and steel cables.

Obviously, any determined thief with the right tools, time, and determination will eventually be able to cut the straps with bolt cutters, but it is generally easier to cut through the roof rack than the straps themselves.

How strong are SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps

The manufacturer of SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps went to great lengths to make these items as secure as possible, taking their weight, flexibility, ease of use, and cost into consideration.

The two stainless steel security cables which are embedded into each strap are made from 7x19 strand weave, which equates to 133 wire strands wrapped around each other.

The two steel cables are then encased in 1/8th inch thick, by 1 1/4 inch wide polypropylene webbing material.  The webbing sides are double stitched with nylon Tex 70 thread, which is very strong and typically used in luggage construction or leather products which are for outside use. Lockable Tie Down Straps went to great lengths to make these items as secure as possible, taking their weight, flexibility, ease of use, and cost into consideration.

Keeping in mind that with enough time, effort, and the right tools, no item can be kept perfectly safe from theft.  However most thieves carry few tools with them.  The majority of thefts occur when opportunistic thieves simply come across items they think are easy to steal, so using straps with anti-theft features are a great way to reduce theft of your unattended items.

How SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps Work

SPT Lockable Tie Down Straps are extremely simple to use and apply.  They work exactly the same way as a regular tie downs, however, they offer the additional feature of being able to be locked with a Key Refer to fig 1 and 2 .

The SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Downs utilize friction and the widest point of the item being secured to prevent any removal from the straps while the vehicle is unattended - Refer to fig 3.

In the case of skis and snow boards the bindings and ends prevent any of these items being removed from an unattended vehicle.

These Lockable Tie Downs are available in two versatile lengths to suit any chosen load.

Surf Board Security

Have you ever ended your surf day and stopped off to catch a bite to eat, but were not able to relax because you left your surf board on the roof of your car?

Now, for the first time there is an easy way to deal with this age-old problem of surfboard theft.  Locking surfboards with SPT Security Tie Downs is as easy as 1-2-3, just cinch them down and lock.

Unlike ladders and bikes, surfboards have no way for a security cable to pass through them to tie down to a vehicle rack (also true for snowboards, lumber, wakeboards, some kayaks, etc.).

This inability to pass cable through them has been an ongoing problem since the beginning of surfing.

Today it is crucial to lock and secure surfboards due to both the rising costs to produce and increased demand due to unavailability of foam blanks.

SPT Straps are all in one tie-down straps and security system is both the simplest way to lock boards and the easiest way just to tie them down.

To protect your board, it's easy.  Just replace your existing tie-down straps, bungee cords, or rope with SPT Security Tie Down Straps.

Surfers are infamous for having difficulty securing their surfboards because cable locks cannot pass through the surfboard to lock it. Many surfers have to use a specialty surfboard lock which can be time consuming and tedious.

Can a Surfboard or other secured item be slid out from underneath these straps?

SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Straps are designed to prevent this type of theft.  The widest part of the secured item is positioned between the front and back strap making the item difficult to be slid forward or backward out of the straps.

SPT KanuLock Lockable Tie Down Strap FAQ’s

What do the colors represent?

The SPT KanuLock range of lockable tie downs have been classified into two easily identifiable colors to enable you to quickly recognize the best product to suit your needs. The two colors represent the two different strap lengths, 8 ft. (2.5m) – Green, and 13 ft. (4.0m) – Yellow

Which SPT KanuLock tie down will best suit my needs?

Every customer has different requirements. It’s entirely up to you to decide what length of strap will best suit your needs. We have listed below some recommendations for each strap but if you have any doubts please feel free to contact us directly.

  • SPT Surf 8 ft. (2.5m) – Designed to lock up and secure three shortboards or two long boards. Other applications – Racing skis, rowing sculls, paddle boards, windsurfers, bikes, luggage.
  • SPT Tour 13 ft. (4.0m) – Designed to lock up and secure kayaks, canoes or anything requiring that little bit of extra strap length. Other applications – Surfboard & longboard stacked, windsurfers,
Moto-X & mountain bikes, and luggage.

Please Note: These are only recommendations and SPT does not take responsibility for the suitability of each product.

Compared to other tie downs, SPT KanuLock Security Straps seem quite expensive

It is natural to compare our product to standard tie downs already on the market for around $15-$25. However this product stands in a field of its own by providing peace of mind and security for the hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars worth of equipment stored on your roof racks or trailers. The SPT range of tie downs provides you with:

  • Investment protection of sporting, personal or trade equipment
  • Peace of mind with TWO STRANDS OF STEEL CABLE IN EACH STRAP!
  • Provides the same easy to use application as standard tie downs
  • Can be applied in almost any application, e.g. The SPT Tour 13 ft. (4.0m) can be applied to surfboards, kayaks, canoes, bicycles, luggage, windsurfers, tools and ladders. The application possibilities are only limited by your own imagination.

Can you use the tie down when it is unlocked?

Yes – The lockable tie down works exactly the same as a normal tie down strap when the buckle is not locked.

What if you lose the key? Can you get a replacement?

The lockable tie down comes with two keys. One key should be stored on the customer’s key set, and the other stored as a replacement at home. If a key is lost, it can be easily cut and replaced.  Contact the manufacture and they will provide key blanks.

Does the strap damage the board?

No. The soft webbing protects the board from the stainless steel cables. The Santoprene lock casing protects the board or car from knocks but special care should be taken (as with all tie downs) when fixing it to the rack system.

Can you slide the board or boat out from the straps?

The lock is designed to operate only when the straps are pulled tight – this prevents ‘slack in the system’. Added to this, the fact that boats and boards are wider in the middle makes it impossible to slide them out from a pair of locked straps.

Do you have to lock the SPT Strap each time you use it?

No, the SPT Security Strap works just like any ordinary tie-down strap. You only use the lock as needed for security purposes.

Will the SPT Security Straps damage my gear or vehicle when tightened?

No, the polypropylene strap is a soft material that is one inch wide and will not damage your gear or vehicle when tightened. In addition, the buckle on the strap has a soft plastic boot that keeps the metal buckle from touching any surface on your gear or vehicle.

Why are SPT Security Tie Down Straps sold in pairs?

Because they are used most commonly with vehicle racking systems, which have two different racks for the front and back of the roof. In most instances, the load carried rests on both racks. To ensure the highest load safety and security from theft, SPT recommends strapping the load down over both the front and rear bars of the racking system using only SPT Security Straps.

Using only one SPT Security Strap on one of the racking system bars, while securing the load on the other bar with a normal tie-down strap is not suggested, as a thief could potentially cut the regular tie-down strap and slide the gear through the single SPT Security Strap.

How strong are SPT Lockable Tie Down Straps

The manufacturer of SPT Lockable Tie Down Straps went to great lengths to make these items as secure as possible, taking their weight, flexibility, ease of use, and cost into consideration.

Keeping in mind that with enough time, effort, and the right tools, no item can be kept perfectly safe from theft.  However most thieves carry few tools with them.  The majority of theft occur when opportunistic thieves simply come across items they think are easy to steal.

The heart of SPT Lockable Tie Down Straps is its patented anti-theft steel cable system.  Embedded in the middle webbing of each SPT Lockable Tie Down Strap are two 1/8th inch diameter steel cables. Other similar products on the market only have one cable!

This stainless steel security cables embedded into each strap are made from 7x19 strand weave, which equates to 133 wire strands wrapped around each other.

The two steel cables are then encased in 1/8th inch thick, by 1 1/4 inch wide polypropylene webbing material, which is black in color.  The webbing sides are double stitched with nylon Tex 70 thread, which is very strong (typically used in luggage construction or leather products which are for outside use).

The SPT Lockable Tie Down Straps are harder to cut than standard security cable.  One would think that it would be easy to cut a strap which contained a simple cable, however due to SPT Lockable Tie Down Strap's patented construction; this security strap is very difficult to cut.  Due to the fact that the two steel cables are mounted in each strap, the steel cables are completely surrounded by the straps thick webbing.  This feature makes it difficult for the metal cutters to get to it cable.  Because the majority wire cutters are solely designed to cut metal, when the blades come in contact with the outer webbing material, the cutting blades become mashed together in the cutters jaws.   This is due to the fact that the blades of cable cutters are not designed to cut webbing.
