Where to Lock Your Laptop
It is important to find a secure, immovable object to attach your MicroSaver cable for the most effective defense against theft.
At your desk, attach the MicroSaver Combination Laptop Lock:
Most desks have pass-through holes for computer, electrical and phone cables. Put your MicroSaver cable through the pass-through hole and wrap it around the back of the desk or desk bracket.
At your hotel, attach the MicroSaver ComboSaver:
To the closet's clothing hanger bars
To the arms of the hotel room chair (but make sure they're big enough to resist breakage!)
To a bolted-down table
Through a drawer handle (make sure that it is strong enough to resist a strong pull!)
In your car, attach the MicroSaver ComboSaver:
Around the steering wheel
Around the headrest attachment bars if the headrest is not detachable)
In the trunk, through the spare tire if it uses a locking mechanism
To the baby seat hook above the back seat
Around the seat belt loop in shoulder-belt seat belts (If possible, put your laptop in the trunk or below the seats so it is not visible)
At the airport, attach the MicroSaver ComboSaver Notebook Lock:
Around the bolted-down seats in waiting areas of most airports
Why Laptop Security is Important
It is more important than you think to make sure your laptop computer does not end up in the wrong hands.
If you purchased a laptop for personal use, you are probably very protective of it, most likely because of the cost to replace it. You also understand the hassle of re-creating the information stored on that laptop ... personal files, pictures, contact information, calendars, etc.
What about the security risk that information represents? Could a thief use your laptop to access your bank account details or social security number? The value of the information ON a laptop is usually much greater than the cost OF the laptop itself.
If your laptop was provided by your employer, the security risk is even greater. Stolen laptops may contain confidential company information (like employee salaries, new product plans or fin ancial details). Stored passwords may enable thieves to hack into the company's network, where they can do even greater damage, perhaps even endangering your job. In fact, an FBI study revealed that 57% of all network breaches originate from stolen computers! It pays to look after your laptop whether your company provided it or you bought it yourself!
