Be Carefull of Metro Rip Off Scams

Travelers who ride Metros should be careful of metro scams that appear to be increasing in major metropolitan cities around the world. Several cities, such as Washington D.C, New York, Chicago, Barcelona, Paris, and other similar sized cities have been reporting increases in the theft of expensive electronics from metro customers. Typically the most common electronic items stolen by thieves are iPhones, Blackberries and music players.

To give travelers a small idea of the extent of the problem, Washington D.C has recently reported that the thefts of electronic devices accounted for 76 percent of Metro-related robberies in 2010. The Washington Metro Police further reported that the thefts of the electronic devices are climbing, and 60 percent of the devices that were stolen were snatched from the hands of customers. Thieves typically target metro riders who have an electronic device in his/her hand and are standing near the door of a metro train. The thieves who may be in the metro car or on the train platform simply grabs the device out of the victims hands and and runs out the door just as it is closing. Before the victim can react, the thief is gone, the metro door is closed, and victim is left in a metro train car traveling to the next stop.

Travelers should be aware that these types of crimes are crimes of opportunity and can be greatly reduced by a few common-sense steps. Those steps include:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings and the people around you.
  • Keep your phones, iPads and music players concealed.
  • Carry electronic devices in a place where they are not easily seen or easy to reach. Using on the many travel security purses, travel bags, or security waist packs will provide a higher level of security than other non-security bags, Just a few of the security bags can be found here.
  • Keep the volume low enough that that you can hear what's going on around you.
  • Avoid sitting or standing near doors of rail cars or buses.
