Sicily is an unbelievably beautiful island, though muggings, theft and violent crime seem to plague its major cities. It is advisable to return to your hotel after dark, unless the area is populated and well lit. In particular Messina and Palermo carry the largest threat.

Messina

The areas around the central station and harbor are the dodgiest parts of town. Foreigners and women are the easiest people to target, so take extra care when traveling.

Palermo
