RFID Blocking Credit Card & Passport Sleeves

RFID chips embedded within passports and passport cards allow authorities, government employee and vendors (like airlines) to scan your passport quickly during boarding and passport stations – some of which can scan your information from a distance to make border crossing a little faster.

That's the good news about RFID, however, if you do not protect your credit cards, identification cards, or passports your information can be stolen with the same technology.

Does Your US Passport Contain the RFID Chip?

Since October 2006, the U.S. has been issuing only e-passports. While older passports are still valid, when they expire, they will be replaced with the new e-passport. The cover to the right is a photograph of what the new cover of the US e-passport which contains the RFID chip looks like. Note the logo on the bottom of the cover.

RFID Credit Cards and Passport Sleeves are Easy and Inexpensive to Use

Each RFID Secure Sleeve is designed will hold one credit card or ID card.  Simply place your credit card in the wafer thin RFID protection sleeve - which is slim enough that you can put your shielded card right back in your wallet where you normally keep it.
RFID Sleeves are made of a durable Tyvek fiberbond exterior combined with the patented RFID shielding alloy lined card sleeve technology that blocks radio waves and prevents scanners from reading the chip inside your cards and passport. That’s why it’s important to keep your cards and passport inside a shielded holder at all times, unless asked by the authority to remove it for inspection.

Prevents "Electronic Pickpocketing" of RFID Chips Embedded in new Credit Cards and Drivers Licenses

The biggest change in credit cards is the embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip, enabling what the industry calls "contactless payments."  Since 2005, many credit card companies such as Chase Bank began introducing their RF Credit Card and coined the term "Blink" technology, which allows consumers with these RFID chipped credit cards – also called "contactless" cards, to simply wave them in front of an RFID Enabled Point of Sale terminal.  While many consumers are unaware that many of their credit cards contain this technology, it is estimated that that credit card companies have issued about 100 million of these RFID enabled credit cards.
However, over the next 2-3 years, it is expected that credit card issuers will replace every single magnetic stripe credit and debit card with a new contactless smartcard. Why shouldn't they? These cards seem to make it all easier. So much easier that some folks are reading your credit cards before you even take them out of your wallet.

The apparent benefits of RFID credit card transactions are convenience, speed and the elimination of employee contact with the card.  To minimize accidental reading of these cards, they are designed to be read at a distance of one to four inches from the reader.
It’s because of this technology that can allow an RF enabled card to be "hi-jacked" by use of an unauthorized RFID scanner, and then the information used for fraudulent purposes.  It is important to note that there are two parts to this process:  Scanning the card to retrieve the information, and then being able to use the retrieved information to make a fraudulent financial transaction. The implication in recent media articles is that it is easy to "hi-jack" the RFID information, and that it is easy to then use this information to make fraudulent purchases. That’s where the use of a RFID Blocking Sleeve comes into play. By placing your RF enabled cards into these sleeves, they are protected from being “hi-jacked” by an unauthorized person.

Electronic Pickpocket Protection FAQ

What card types will the sleeves shield, and what card types will the product not sheild?

The patented RFID Blocking Credit Card and Passport Sleeves are designed to shield all contactless credit cards, passports, drivers licenses, ISO 14443A/B and EPC Gen1/Gen2 contactless smart cards; any contactless card that operates at 13.56 Mhz and above.  It does not shield non-smart cards (older 125khz proximity cards). On cards that include a secondary 125 khz antenna added for backward compatibility only the new 13.56 Mhz interface is shielded.  The 13.56 Mhz interface is generally the only one with personal data.

What card types are NOT protected by RFID card shields?

RFID Shields DO NOT shield these types of cards:

  • Older "prox" cards, HID 125 khz. Includes: ProxCard II, ISOProx II, DuoProx II, Smart ISOProx II, Smart DuoProxII, ProxCard Plus
